Rail Hostesses on Premier Trains

Mumbai : The Railway Board is working on a proposal to recruit rail hostesses to create an extra-happy ambience for people travelling in premier trains like Rajdhani and Jan Shatabdi. This is, of course, on the lines of air hostesses.

If the proposal gets the go-ahead from railway minister Mamata Banerjee, the Railways will soon invite applications from aspirants, said a board official.

According to the official, the Railways is very keen to provide better service to passengers which should be on a par with air services, particularly in the area of food and cleanliness. For starters, the hostesses would be recruited for prestigious trains like Rajdhani and Shatabdi.

This system is in vogue in a number of countries and would provide ample job opportunities to women. Since women are more suited to hospitality, they would bring good repute to the Railways, feels the board. Of late, there has been numerous complaints from passengers on excess billing or poor quality meals.

According to sources, a railway committee has also recommended appointment of women as rail hostesses so that women could get at least 50% jobs, especially in the catering segment. The railway ministry would have to work out ways to provide security to these women on duty as they would have to work on long distance mail and express trains. The women would be put on the job only after all security aspects are looked into.

An official from the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) said there's a proposal to introduce the trolley system in all A Class trains to serve food to passengers. A railway panel has also recommended maintaining a fresh supply of quality meals to passengers in each class.
