NEW DELHI : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on Friday, raided the Gurgoan and Delhi based properties of former general manager of North-Western Railway (NWR), Ashok Gupta, who retired from the post in Jaipur last month.

The CBI sleuths unearthed properties and cash worth Rs 4 crore in the raids, which were undergoing till reports last came in. The investigating agency also seized his banks accounts and lockers in 18 banks in Gurgaon. Gupta was being interrogated at his Gurgoan residence till late night.

"He held the post of general manager of North Western Railway from March 27, 2007, to August 31, 2009. All the properties were allegedly bought after 2006. The CBI action followed a tip-off that Gupta had amassed properties worth Rs 1.5 crore, but raids have revealed much more than that," said CBI spokesman Atul Gupta.

The agency's Jaipur branch had received complaints that the GM had amassed property disproportionate to his income. "So far, properties and cash worth Rs 4 crore have been unearthed in one day's raids," the CBI official added.

The CBI teams conducted raids at Gupta's house in Palam Vihar where he and his family live, two flats and the office in the same locality belonging to his son, who is a chartered accountant, and another house in Delhi. He also owns two plots in Palam Vihar, CBI officials said.

The sleuths recovered cash worth Rs. 96 lakh from his account with State Bank of India's Palam Vihar branch and Rs 6 lakh from 17 other bank accounts in Gurgoan. Jewellery worth Rs 4 lakh were also recovered from his locker with SBI.

During the search at his residence in Palam Vihar, the raiding officials recovered Rs 1 lakh in cash, fix deposits worth Rs 1.37 crore, jewellery worth Rs 14 lakh and shares of various companies worth Rs 10 lakh.

The teams also seized the accounts of his brother Kiran Chand Gupta in Gurgoan and recovered cash worth Rs 20 lakh and jewellery worth 16 lakh.
