IR to upgrade monitoring using 'Intellitrain'

New Delhi : The Indian Railways will soon add a feather to its monitoring capability with the proposed induction of 'Intellitrain' a technology promoted by US manufacturing major Electromotive Diesel (EMD), that allows early detection of minor problems and gives corrective action recommendations, thereby preventing major failures.

''The Indian Railways plans to incorporate this innovation that uses remote monitoring and diagnostics to give railroads live data concerning the status of their locomotives,'' Mr Vishwas Moktali, EMD's MD (Locomotive technology) told newspersons on the sidelines of a function today.

He said it works through Remote Monitoring, a locomotive automatically initiates a remote alert given an abnormal condition, and sends the locomotive number, its condition and the fault(s) that triggered the condition. ''The Central Server receives and stores the information and automatically sends an Alert Notification to a predefined group of experts. Once the alert is accepted, the recommendation for corrective action may be sent out to the appropriate people,'' he added.

This ''information super railway'' capable of revolutionising how railroads operate, is being developed by EMD, that has had business relationship with Indian Railways for nearly 50 years and includes delivery of freight and passenger locomotives.1. WDG3A - 50
