Iron ore rakes movement on Indian East Coast to resume

It is reported that night movement of iron ore rakes on the 450 kilometer Kirandul to Kottavalasa line is to resume after having remained suspended for about a week.

According to East Coast Railway sources, the suspension was due to the week long celebration by the Maoists. For the past one week ECoR has been running on the K-K line 10/11 rakes a day on an average and that too during the day time only. In normal times, when night movement takes place, 14/15 rakes are operated a day. For several days in July, the average daily throughput along the line was around 10/11 rakes a day mainly due to heavy rains.

In fact, heavy rains had also hit coal loading at Talcher mines of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd and also loading at three ports, namely, Paradip, Visakhapatnam and Gangavaram, served by ECoR. As a spokesman for ECoR pointed out, the daily average loading in July dropped to 3,750 wagons as against targeted 3,940.

Fortunately, the weather condition having improved, ECoR’s daily average loading of wagons too has now improved to 4,200 as compared with 3,900 in the same month last year.
