Hollow pier vs solid pier in

bridge-cost of construction

Does designing a hollow column imparts more strength to the structure or does it save on the construction cost??.

In construction of Railway Bridges, stability & safety is top most criteria. Cost of construction is never a criteria but feasibility of construction is also acriteria in difficult location

Higher cross section area reduce the bearing pressure & does not create tension at base due to bending moment caused by horizontal force on account of accelaration & braking effort in addition to force due to normal tractive effort becuase of high section modulus.

Therefore more cross sectional area is important rather than whether pier is hollow or hollow portion is filled up by sand (as done in well foundation) or is of solid concrete.
