Andhra Pradesh Govt. to sue Delhi Metro chief for defamation

"E. Shreedharan had said that the Hyderabad Metro Rail would become a major political scam"

Hyderabad:- The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to sue Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) managing director E Sreedharan for defaming its reputation by making "imaginary allegations" against the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) project.

Finance minister K Rosaiah told the media on Monday that the defamation amount and respondent parties would be decided by legal experts.

Sreedharan, regarded as the first-ever metro rail project architect in India, wrote to the Planning Commission expressing serious doubts and reservations over the way HMR contract was awarded to a consortium led by Maytas. This happened soon after the Planning Commission hailed the project and recommended to the Prime Minister that other states to follow this 'Build Operate Transfer' model of HMR.

Sreedharan's two observation were - the HMR would become a major political scam in the country, and that it had been awarded to a contractor who owned huge lands along the proposed project area, with ulterior motive to help value of those lands to go up.

Claiming that full transparency was maintained and every detail of the project put up on its website, Rosaiah said there was no coherence between the allegations made by Sreedharan. "After the Planning Commission replied, strongly defending the project, Sreedharan went to media writing critical articles and creating issues that are imaginary and derogatory," he complained.

In September, the state government had demanded an apology from Sreedharan. After waiting 45 days for his response, the government has now decided on a legal battle against the DMRC chief.
