AIR goes for Digital Radio Transmission:
FM quality reception monitored on SW

Ahmedabad :
All India Radio has recently launched its first Digital Radio transmission in the country. The technology called DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale)- has been launched at the Khampur Transmeter of All India Radio-near Delhi by the Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharati.

Mr V G Malagi who is working in R & D, All India Radio, New Delhi was in Ahmedabad for monitoring of DRM signals transmitted from AIR, Khampur has said that the digital technology of broadcast-has been launched after the series of test and trails for last two years. He further explained that the existing Short Wave transmitter at Khampur Delhi has been modified for DRM broadcasting and radiating at frequency 6100 Khz from 14:30 to 17:30 Daily on 100 KW power. The primary expected coverage area of this system is in the radious of 800 kms.

The live demonstration and lecture on this DRM technology have been organized at All India Radio- Ahmedabad under the aegis of Broadcast Engineering Society of India (BES). The Honorary Secretary of BES- Gujarat Chapter and the Station Engineer of AIR-Ahmedabad Mrs. Meenakshi Singhvi has said in her welcome speech that Digital Radio Mondiale is a consortium of some 75 broadcast-related organizations, which has worked to develop a digital transmission system for the current AM broadcast bands. The DRM system provides an universal, non-proprietary, digital transmission system designed to replace, eventually, the current analogue transmissions in the LW, MW and SW bands. She explained that DRM has near-FM sound quality plus the ease-of-use that comes from digital transmissions. DRM offers great advantages for listeners like excellent reception quality: no more fading, noise or interference.

The quality of DRM signals witnessed by the audiences on receiver “Morphy Richards” were superb and very near to FM quality. The experts believe that DRM is progressively going to replace classic AM broadcastings, and will become the "digital AM" by using the existing band and infrastructure with little modification in the transmitter and with the present listening habits. Invitees from DDK, ISRO, and other Broadcast Media were also present on this occasion.

"Death of Digital Radio Mondiale in 2008 as well?"

"From both formal and informal discussions among participants at the HFCC, it is now clear that the proposed DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) system, that would have converted analogue Shortwave to digital, FM like quality reception would hardly be implemented if ever on a large scale, beyond the current experimental stage."

"Why don't you use DRM on Shortwave?"

"DRM is the acronym of Digital Radio Mondiale, a new technology intended to offer digital, almost FM, quality to Shortwave, Long Wave and Medium Wave (AM) broadcasts. Unfortunately DRM is incompatible with ordinary Shortwave radios and requires buying new receivers, that are not currently available in mass production, or at a cost that is anywhere close to a conventional, analogue Shortwave receiver... Some large companies are pushing DRM by convincing program producers and broadcasters to start airing in DRM ahead of time, but unless there is mass availability and penetration of receivers on the listeners side, this will remain - unfortunately - a technological experiment, and broadcasters using it to reach their listeners now, are clearly throwing their money out of the window."
