MMRDA plans 1.4 km skywalk at Kalyan

Mumbai:- The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will construct a 1.4-km-long skywalk that will connect the East and West side Kalyan at a cost of Rs. 83.90 crore. "The skywalk will help ease traffic congestion at the railway station," said MMRDA commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad.
The proposed skywalk will be divided in two parts. The first part of the skywalk will cover a distance of 630 metres and connect the Kalyan railway station (west) to Gurudev hotel and Shivaji Chowk. The route of the remaining skywalk will be decided shortly, said joint project director of the MMRDA, Dilip Kawathkar.
The decision came after a meeting officials of the MMRDA and the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Council. Deputy chairperson of the Maharashtra Legislative Council Vasant Davkhare, KDMC commissioner Govind Rathod and Gaikwad were also present.
Following requests by the municipal corporations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the MMRDA has decided to provide 1,400 crore for the implementation of the Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project in the MMR. This fund will be utilised for building four flyovers at Thane Ghodbunder Road and constructing the Dombivli-Mumbra Link Road. The MMRDA is also planning other projects in the region including a monorail link between Thane and Kalyan. "The existing skywalk at Dombivli wil also be extended," said Gaikwad. While 50 skywalks have planned for Mumbai, so far only one has come up at the Bandra (E) railway station.
